DOJ Urged by 50 Attorneys General to Take Action Against Illegally Operating Online Gambling Platforms
In a united front, 50 attorneys general from various states and territories have signed a letter urging the Department of Justice (DOJ) to address the growing issue of illegal offshore gambling. However, four states and two territories chose not to join the coalition.
The three methods proposed by the attorneys general to eliminate these illegal platforms are:
- Seizing assets and domain names of the offshore gaming operators.
- Seeking injunctions to legally stop these operations.
- Coordinating with states and financial institutions to block unlawful transactions and dismantle the financial networks supporting illegal gambling.
The states of Montana, New Mexico, Vermont, and Wisconsin, as well as the territories of Guam and Puerto Rico, did not sign the letter.
This coalition effort is being led by attorneys general from Connecticut, Massachusetts, Nebraska, and Utah, who emphasize the urgency due to illegal gambling surpassing $400 billion in volume and costing states over $4 billion annually in lost tax revenue.
