Domestic Linux Creation: Helwan Linux, an Egyptian Operating System

Helwan Linux, a Linux distribution developed by the Helwan University Linux Group in Cairo, Egypt, is making waves in the technology industry. This homegrown operating system showcases Egypt's growing presence in the information technology space.

The distribution, based on Arch Linux and featuring the Cinnamon desktop environment, offers a well-balanced experience that emphasizes both performance and user-friendliness. However, it's important to note that the size of the Helwan Linux ISO may require a larger download compared to other lightweight distributions, with an approximate size of 4.0 GB.

Designed for developers, Helwan Linux includes a variety of pre-installed software for both developer and media use cases. Developers can expect to find Geany, VS Code, Python, PHP, Rust, SQLite, MariaDB, and more. Media professionals will appreciate the inclusion of Firefox, LibreOffice, VLC, HexChat, and Geary.

The Cinnamon desktop environment provides a clean, user-friendly experience with the option to customise themes. The operating system supports multiple languages, with Arabic as the primary language, but also includes English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, and Russian.

Unfortunately, during testing, issues were encountered while using Helwan Linux in a virtual machine. It's suggested that it might perform better on bare metal hardware.

The ISO can be downloaded from the official website, and Helwan Linux is also available via FOSS Force. The Helwan Linux project is a unique milestone for Egypt, demonstrating the country's growing capabilities in the world of technology.
