Domestic season preparation gets an explosive start for Prithvi Shaw as he debuts with a new team
In the opening game of the Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament, Maharashtra faced Chhattisgarh at the Guru Nanak College grounds in Chennai. Chhattisgarh won the toss and chose to field first, restricting Maharashtra to 252 in their first innings.
Prithvi Shaw, the youngest Indian to score a century on Test debut, moved to Maharashtra ahead of the 2025-26 domestic season in an attempt to get his career back on track. He made a strong start in the tournament, scoring a century off 122 deliveries on the morning of day one. Shaw and Sachin Dhas put on a dominant opening stand of 71 in 19.2 overs, but Dhas was dismissed for 10, leaving Shaw to carry on alone.
Despite Shaw's impressive knock, Maharashtra soon slipped to 86-4. However, Shaw remained standing, and the team managed to recover slightly, reaching 166-6 before Shaw was dismissed for 111. Chhattisgarh were bowled out for 149, giving Maharashtra a victory target of 185.
In the second innings, Maharashtra were all out for 217. Left-arm spinners Vicky Ostwal (5-33) and Hitesh Walunj (5-67) took a combined 10 wickets for Maharashtra, with the wicket being helpful for spinners in the second innings.
Chhattisgarh, in their second innings, managed to score 252, setting Maharashtra a target of 167 to win in two sessions on day three. Shaw opened the batting alongside Dhas once again, but his second outing with Maharashtra in the tournament was disappointing. He was dismissed for one in the second over of the chase, and Maharashtra were unable to recover, eventually falling short by 19 runs.
Shaw's career has been on a downward trend over the past few years, culminating in his axing from the Mumbai team halfway through the last domestic season. He played his last match for Maharashtra in the 2023-24 season before participating in the 2025-26 season. Despite his struggles in the Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament, Shaw was promptly included in the team's squad for the tournament, which serves as preparation for the domestic season.
