Growing up, Donald attended Greeley High School, graduating in 1965. Following his schooling, he enlisted in the Army, serving from 1967 to 1969 and earning the rank of Specialist E-4 in Avionics. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1969.
After his military service, Donald continued his education at Aims Community College (University of Northern Colorado) from 1965 to 1967.
