Donations totalling thousands of euros distributed to those affected by the Drognitz fire incident
In the small town of Drognitz, a major fire that broke out on September 20, 2025, at 20:51 Uhr, has been extinguished. The rescue control center reported the good news, but firefighters remain on site to remove remaining hotspots and pull apart construction rubble.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the police, who are examining the scene since Monday. Mayor Tom Zimmermann suspects the fire may have been caused by a lightning strike.
The unfortunate incident has left 18 residents, ranging in age from two to 96, in need of temporary accommodation. Nine residents of the completely burned-down house are currently staying with neighbors, while a young family can stay in the guesthouse of friends. As of the time of this article, the remaining residents are being accommodated with relatives, neighbors, and in a holiday apartment.
The Thuringian aid fund e.V. has provided 50,000 euros for the affected families in Drognitz, to be paid out within the shortest possible time. The Rotary Club, an organisation that has already provided significant assistance, has also contributed 50,000 euros.
Further donations for the victims of the fire were collected at a festival over the weekend, with around 1,500 euros to be paid into the donation account. As of Monday afternoon, around 4,500 euros had been received on the donation account.
Material donations for the victims of the fire have been received or offered, but are no longer being accepted. The Thuringian aid fund helps in individual cases where social security offices, employment agencies, or health insurance companies reach their limits. A permanent solution is being sought for a retired couple who lost their house.
The police have estimated the damage from the fire at one million euros. The fire, which also destroyed one of three residential buildings along with four associated barns, has caused a significant impact on the community of Drognitz.
The road to Altenbeuthen at the scene of the fire remains half-closed for safety reasons. The police are investigating the cause of the fire in all directions to ensure a thorough understanding of the incident.
As the community of Drognitz begins to rebuild, the support and solidarity shown by neighbours, friends, and the wider community will provide a beacon of hope during these challenging times.
