In a significant step towards a sustainable and green economy, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has made a remarkable achievement in its Green Hydrogen project. This initiative, the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa, has been developed in collaboration with Expo 2020 Dubai and Siemens Energy.

The project, led by Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, has been instrumental in supporting Dubai’s sustainability and net-zero emissions goals, as well as the Dubai Green Mobility Strategy 2030 and the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050. It also aligns with the UAE's National Hydrogen Strategy and the UAE's Net Zero 2050 goals.

The Green Hydrogen project has the capacity to generate about 20 kilograms of hydrogen per hour. Since its inception in May 2021, DEWA has produced over 100 tonnes of green hydrogen. This hydrogen has been used to generate 1.15 gigawatt hours of clean electricity, a significant contribution to Dubai's renewable energy portfolio.

A portion of the produced green hydrogen has been supplied to ENOC for hydrogen-powered vehicles and industrial applications. Approximately 11 tonnes have been utilised at the Service Station of the Future at Expo 2020 Dubai.

The project includes a storage system capable of holding up to 12 hours of production for use in nighttime power generation. This ensures a consistent supply of clean energy, even when solar power is not available.

The use of green hydrogen has helped reduce more than 515 tonnes of carbon emissions, a significant step towards the UAE's clean energy transition. The project's success strengthens Dubai and the UAE’s global competitiveness in green hydrogen, with the country being ranked first worldwide in green hydrogen competitiveness by Alvarez & Marsal's 2024 report.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer stated, "The Green Hydrogen project supports the UAE's efforts towards a sustainable and green economy, and we are proud to be at the forefront of this transformative technology."

The Green Hydrogen project marks a significant milestone in the UAE's clean energy transition, positioning it to expand across energy, transport, and industrial sectors. This initiative further cements Dubai and the UAE's commitment to a sustainable future.
