DWP Pension Credit Statistics Analysis by PensionBee Revealed
In a call for action, it has been emphasized that clearer communication, simpler claims processes, and a unified national strategy are needed to ensure every eligible household receives the Pension Credit they are entitled to. This comes as new data from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) shows a decrease in Pension Credit applications, with a 16% drop compared to the equivalent period last year.
The expansion of the Winter Fuel Payment last summer did deliver a boost to Pension Credit claims, leading to a 44% overall increase in the year following the initial announcement of Winter Fuel restrictions in 2024. However, the momentum of this increase is already fading, as per the comments made by Lisa Picardo, Chief Business Officer UK at PensionBee.
According to the latest DWP data, approximately 700,000 eligible pensioner households are missing out on Pension Credit support worth up to £4,000 annually. This support not only serves as vital extra income for vulnerable older people but also acts as a gateway to further help such as cost of living payments and winter fuel payments.
Lisa Picardo has highlighted the need for the government to urgently address the significant 48% private wealth gender gap among those approaching retirement. She emphasized the need for policy reforms and greater support from employers and the pensions industry to improve women's retirement outcomes.
PensionBee, an online pension provider, has been at the forefront of this issue. According to Picardo, there has been a 16% decrease in new Pension Credit claims compared to the equivalent period last year. She stressed that no one should face pensioner poverty due to administrative barriers or lack of awareness regarding Pension Credit.
The low take-up rates of Pension Credit have been consistent between 61% and 66% for over a decade, as per the government's own data. This underscores the need for urgent action to ensure that all eligible individuals receive the support they are entitled to.
As the DWP continues to release data on Pension Credit applications, it is crucial that efforts are made to improve access and awareness of this vital support for vulnerable older people.
