Dynamic Quarterback Green leads Arkansas in a landslide victory over Arkansas State with a score of 56-14
In a thrilling encounter, the Arkansas Razorbacks emerged victorious against Arkansas State, securing a 49-7 win in their last home game at War Memorial Stadium. The game marked the beginning of the Razorbacks' SEC (Southeastern Conference) schedule, with their next match against 20th-ranked Ole Miss scheduled for September 13.
The Razorbacks' offense showcased a dominant first quarter, scoring 28 points. Running back Mike Washington and quarterback Taylen Green both notched touchdown runs of 53 and 64 yards, respectively, while Raylen Sharpe caught a 37-yard touchdown pass.
However, the Razorbacks' running game was limited, with no player gaining more than 38 yards rushing. Nonetheless, Green made up for it with his impressive performance, accounting for 420 total yards in the game, including 151 yards rushing and one touchdown, and 269 yards passing with four touchdowns.
Arkansas State's offense struggled in the first half, with their only score coming from a 98-yard kickoff return by Chauncy Cobb. Quarterback Jaylen Raynor completed 21 of 33 passes for 125 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions. Arkansas State senior running back and kick returner Ja'Quez Cross, who was instrumental in the Red Wolves' offense, will miss the rest of the season due to a knee injury.
The Razorbacks' defense was formidable, recording four sacks and 10 tackles for loss, limiting Arkansas State to 285 total yards. Linebacker Xavian Sorey Jr. led the team with 14 total tackles.
In the fourth quarter, redshirt freshman KJ Jackson took over as quarterback for Arkansas. Jackson led the Razorbacks on a 99-yard scoring drive, finishing it with a 6-yard run. The Razorbacks' offense also scored again before the end of the second quarter, with a 12-play, 83-yard drive resulting in a touchdown pass to Jalen Brown.
Arkansas's tight ends combined for five catches, 88 yards, and a touchdown in the game. Offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino seemed determined to get Green into a passing rhythm in the second quarter, but the Razorbacks stalled for most of the quarter.
The game's highlight came early in the first quarter when Cobb, who replaced Cross on kick returns, scored a 98-yard touchdown. Arkansas State attempted a jump pass from quarterback Jaylen Raynor to an offensive lineman Cameron Ambrose for their only offensive touchdown in the second quarter.
Head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks, Sam Pittman, led the team to this victory. The Razorbacks will face a new challenge as they prepare for their SEC opener against Ole Miss. Arkansas State, on the other hand, will play 16th-ranked Iowa State at home on September 13.
