Craniosynostosis is a birth defect that affects approximately 1 in 2,500 babies in the United States. This condition arises when more than the required number of sutures between a baby's skull bones close prematurely, leading to an uneven and abnormal skull shape.
The most common causes of craniosynostosis are genetic mutations and environmental factors. Some cases are linked to syndromes such as Apert, Crouzon, and Pfeiffer, while many occur sporadically without a known cause. There are several types of craniosynostosis, each with distinct characteristics. Coronal Craniosynostosis leads to a flattened forehead on one side of the skull, and Lambdoid Craniosynostosis results in a flattened structure at the back of the head.
In a normal baby's brain, sutures between the skull bones allow for expansion as the brain grows. However, in craniosynostosis, the premature closing of these sutures inhibits this growth, potentially leading to deformities in the brain structure.
If left untreated, complications such as permanent facial deformation, permanent deformation of the head, poor self-esteem, social isolation, pressure in the intracranial region, delayed responses to development, unforeseen seizures, various eye problems, severe impairment of cognitive abilities can occur.
Fortunately, early intervention can help avoid these complications and keep the baby safe and healthy. In open surgery, the bones are removed from the affected area of the skull, reshaped, and placed back, causing more blood loss and a longer recovery period. In endoscopic surgery, small incisions are made on the scalp to remove sutures, and the baby will wear a special helmet for about a year to reshape the skull. Endoscopic surgery is typically used for babies less than 3 months of age and up to 6 months in some cases, while open surgery is for babies older than 6 months and up to 11 months of age.
