Catastrophe in Afghanistan: Around 250 People Reportedly Perish in Earthquake, According to Local Government Agency - Earthquake Disaster in Afghanistan: Estimated Death Toll Approaches 250 Individuals
In a tragic turn of events, an earthquake of magnitude 6.0, as reported by the US Geological Survey (USGS), struck eastern Afghanistan late last night. The state news agency Baktar, controlled by the Taliban, confirmed the incident.
The epicentre of the earthquake was located in the province of Kunar, Afghanistan, and it occurred at a depth of eight kilometers. The region where the earthquake occurred is known to be the eastern part of the country, specifically in the provinces of Khost and Paktika, near the border with Pakistan.
The earthquake has resulted in at least 250 deaths and around 500 people reported injured. The disaster occurred at midnight, causing many people to be asleep in their homes, potentially increasing the number of casualties.
The Afghan authorities are working tirelessly to provide aid and assistance to the affected areas. Emergency services are being deployed, and international aid organisations have been notified to lend their support.
This earthquake marks the latest in a series of seismic events that have struck Afghanistan in recent years. In 2022 and 2023, deadly earthquakes occurred in the same region, causing widespread destruction and loss of life.
As the situation continues to develop, our thoughts are with those affected by this disaster and we hope for a swift and effective response from the authorities and the international community.
