Earthquake strikes Afghanistan, Taliban reports over 2,200 fatalities
In the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that struck Afghanistan's Nangarhar and Kunar provinces, relief efforts are underway to provide much-needed aid and support to the affected communities.
The initial magnitude 6.0 earthquake, which occurred shortly before 9pm, has left a trail of destruction in its wake. The latest death toll stands at 2,205, making it one of the deadliest natural disasters to hit Afghanistan in recent decades. Over 84,000 people have been affected by the disaster.
Rescue efforts have been complicated by the rough terrain and numerous landslides and debris. Aid workers have reported walking for hours to reach communities cut off by the earthquake. Villages and houses have been flattened, leaving many in need of immediate assistance.
To aid in the rescue efforts, the Afghan government has deployed helicopters and army commandos. The United Nations has also released $10 million in emergency aid, while the European Union (EU) has pledged £1 million in emergency funding to support humanitarian agencies working in Afghanistan. The UK government has also pledged £1 million in emergency funding to be split between these same agencies.
However, the rescue efforts are being threatened by a funding gap of at least $4 million, which could delay critical activities. The United Nations has stated that the $10 million in aid is already running out.
To compound the situation, a second magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck the region early on Friday morning, further exacerbating the already dire situation. Both earthquakes had epicentres about 10km deep.
First aid and emergency supplies are being delivered to those in need, with tents being set up for affected people. The hope is that these efforts will help to alleviate some of the suffering caused by the disaster and provide a much-needed lifeline to those in need.
As the rescue and relief efforts continue, it is crucial that the international community continues to support Afghanistan in its time of need. The people of Afghanistan are facing a crisis of unprecedented proportions, and every effort must be made to ensure that they receive the assistance they require to rebuild their lives and communities.
