Ecuador Looks to Discuss Security Agreements with the United States During Rubio's Tour
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio Visits Ecuador Amidst Drug Trafficking Crackdown
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Ecuador's capital Quito on Wednesday, marking a significant moment in the country's ongoing fight against drug trafficking. This visit comes at a time when Ecuador, a major transit point for cocaine, is grappling with rampant violence and seeking cooperation from the United States to strengthen its security measures.
Ecuador's Interior Minister John Reimberg expressed his expectations for agreements with the United States, stating that these accords will be fundamental for the security of Ecuador. He emphasized that the agreements will likely enhance cooperation in combating violence, with potential support in security measures and crime prevention strategies.
The United States has not yet disclosed the details of the expected agreements, but it is clear that they are aimed at addressing the transformation of Ecuador from one of Latin America's safest countries to one of the most deadly.
Notably, the world's largest producers of cocaine are located between Colombia and Peru, with Ecuador serving as the departure point for 70% of the world's cocaine. Nearly half of this illicit drug is destined for the United States.
In a joint statement, Reimberg and President Daniel Noboa, a right-wing leader, underscored the shared fight against terrorism and drug trafficking. They emphasized that the two nations are engaged in a common effort to ensure the safety and security of their citizens.
The U.S. military has already taken action against drug trafficking vessels, with a reported strike on a vessel coming from Venezuela in international waters on Tuesday, resulting in the death of 11 individuals.
The potential for a U.S. security presence in Ecuador has been raised, following Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld's indication that such a possibility exists. This development recalls the era when the United States operated a military base at the Pacific port of Manta, which was closed in 2009.
For years, the United States has maintained constant assistance to Ecuador in various issues. The Drug Enforcement Administration had a significant presence in the country, contributing to the fight against drug trafficking.
As the fight against drug trafficking continues, it is clear that cooperation between Ecuador and the United States will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of both nations. The anticipated agreements are a testament to this shared commitment.
