Egypt promises to prevent Palestinian displacement, intensifies Gaza-focused assertions
Israel initiated a military offensive in Gaza City in August 2022, marking a significant escalation in its efforts to take over the largest Palestinian city, which Israel claims is Hamas' last stronghold. This action has resulted in a severe exodus, with approximately a million people initially residing in Gaza City, and hundreds of thousands returning to live among the ruins since Israel ordered people out of other areas and launched offensives elsewhere.
The offensive has caused extensive damage to Gaza City, leaving much of it in ruins. The humanitarian crisis in the city is escalating, with residents facing dire conditions. Reports from Gaza health authorities indicate that over 64,000 Palestinians have been killed since the offensive began in October 2022.
The situation has garnered international attention, with Israel currently facing a case at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, accused of genocide. Egypt, a neighbouring country, has expressed its concern, with Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty stating that it will not tolerate the mass displacement of Palestinians in Gaza. Abdelatty has accused Israel of genocide and mass killing of civilians in Gaza.
Egypt's stance is firm, with Abdelatty describing the displacement as a "red line." He further emphasized that displacement equates to liquidation and the end of the Palestinian cause. The Egyptian Foreign Minister has reiterated that Egypt will not tolerate such actions.
As of the current situation, Israel controls approximately 40% of Gaza City. The displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians has been a direct result of Israel's offensive, launched on August 10, 2023, with the stated goal of defeating Hamas militants.
The situation in Gaza City remains a pressing concern for the international community, with calls for a peaceful resolution to the conflict growing louder. The humanitarian crisis, the loss of life, and the displacement of thousands of people underscore the urgency for action.
