Elderly Female Fatally Shot in East Harlem, According to Police Statements
A 69-year-old woman named Robin Wright was tragically shot and killed in East Harlem on Wednesday afternoon. The shooting occurred at East 110th Street and Madison Avenue, near Central Park, just before 12:30 p.m.
According to reports, Wright was walking with Juanita Arnold, a 60-year-old resident of the area, when the incident took place. Arnold did not see who opened fire during the shooting, but she confirmed that Wright had been shot. In a state of shock, Arnold had to check herself to ensure she had not also been hit.
Wright's walker was left on the sidewalk near a pool of blood and crime-scene tape in the hours following the shooting. The crime-scene tape and Wright's walker were still present at the location of the shooting when updates were made to this article.
Morningside Hospital pronounced Wright dead after the shooting. The shooting occurred within the 23rd Precinct, which covers East Harlem. The community has been shaken by the violent incident, with some neighbours calling for a more consistent police presence in the area.
William Smith, a Democratic district leader, expressed concern about the safety of the community, stating, "Our community does not want a police state, but we also do not want a community where people can just feel free discharging illegal firearms and we're losing seniors and pillars of our community."
As of now, police are still investigating the direction in which the shooter fled after the incident. The search results do not contain any information about the identity of the perpetrator before official confirmation.
It is important to note that there were four shootings in the 23rd Precinct this year through Aug. 24, a decrease from six by the same point in 2024. The community hopes that this tragic incident will serve as a catalyst for change and a safer future for all residents.
