Election for European Parliament: Alexander Schweitzer's Journey in Mainz - Wine & Mingle with the Prime Minister at Gutenbergplatz
In a bid to connect with the people of Rhineland-Palatinate ahead of the state election in March 2026, Minister President Alexander Schweitzer has launched a dialogue series titled "Alexander Schweitzer On Tour." This tour will run from early September to late October, visiting cities such as Mainz, Koblenz, Kaiserslautern, and Daaden.
The tour kicked off on the Bad Kreuznach Kornmarkt on an encouraging note, with over 300 guests in attendance. On Monday, September 8, 2025, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, citizens can meet Alexander Schweitzer on the Gutenbergplatz in Mainz for a personal exchange. Mainz's SPD heavyweights, Finance Minister Doris Ahnen and Interior Minister Michael Ebling, will also be present, along with the third SPD constituency candidate, Patric Mรผller.
The event in Mainz is one of the stops in Schweitzer's dialogue series. The Minister President aims to engage directly with people, find out their thoughts, and show approachability during his tour. In an SWR poll conducted in early May, 40% of respondents said they would vote for Alexander Schweitzer in a direct election for Minister President.
However, not everyone in Rhineland-Palatinate is familiar with Schweitzer as a candidate. In the same SWR poll, 55 percent of residents said they didn't know the successor at the time, and only 18 percent thought Schweitzer was "a suitable candidate." Despite this, Schweitzer has shown determination to win over the hearts and minds of the people.
Interestingly, in a direct comparison, Alexander Schweitzer is currently ahead in the polls. This new development comes as the CDU's Gordon Schnieder received only 17% in the same poll.
Schweitzer took over the office from his predecessor Malu Dreyer (SPD) in July 2024. As he embarks on this tour, he plans to serve wine during the events, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for the citizens to engage in open dialogue. The number of guests at the Mainz event could be even more, as more people learn about this opportunity to meet and discuss the future of Rhineland-Palatinate with their Minister President.
