Electric Bi-Articulated Buses, a First for the World, Set to Begin Service in Brazil
In a significant move towards sustainable urban mobility solutions, Volvo Buses and GreenMob Capital have launched the world's first regular operations of 100% electric bi-articulated buses in Goiânia, Brazil.
The city of Goiânia, known for its BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) system, is set to see a transformation as these high-tech electric buses with exceptional safety features hit the roads. The BRT system currently transports approximately 12 million passengers per month and is expected to reach 17 million with network expansion.
The electric Volvo BZRT buses, produced at Volvo's industrial complex in Curitiba, Brazil, are equipped with advanced vehicle technology for efficiency, comfort, and safety. They are fitted with Volvo Dynamic Steering (VDS) and the 'Safety Zones' system, which utilizes GPS to automatically reduce a vehicle's speed in high-risk areas. The buses also come equipped with Volvo Buses' active safety systems, including cameras, front and side sensors, and traffic sign recognition.
The first batch of electric articulated and bi-articulated chassis consists of a total of 21 buses, with 16 articulated and 5 bi-articulated models. These vehicles offer zero CO2 emissions, low noise level, dual-side doors, and air conditioning. The bi-articulated bus can carry up to 250 passengers, while the articulated bus can carry up to 180 passengers.
The electric Volvo BZRT buses will enter service on the East-West BRT line of the Metropolitan Collective Transport Network of Goiânia. The BRT system in Greater Goiânia includes the East-West and North-South corridors, covering a total of 50 km with over 50 stations. The system has connections to Trindade, Goianira, and Senador Canedo.
The arrival of these electric buses in Goiânia marks a significant step towards innovative and sustainable urban mobility solutions for the city. By adopting these high-tech electric buses, Goiânia takes a major step towards decarbonizing public transport. This move strengthens Volvo's commitment to driving the development of sustainable urban mobility solutions.
In addition to Goiânia, Volvo's electric buses will also begin operations in São Paulo, Brazil, further expanding the company's commitment to sustainable urban mobility. The electric Volvo BZRT buses are part of a larger fleet that includes articulated and bi-articulated models, demonstrating Volvo's dedication to providing efficient, safe, and environmentally friendly transportation solutions.
