Electric GMC Sierra EV AT4 Test Drive: Extensive Range, Minimal Off-Road Performance

The 2026 GMC Sierra EV AT4, the latest electric offering from General Motors (GM), is now available for purchase. With a base price of $91,695 and a price as tested of $93,645, this electric truck promises a blend of power, range, and features. However, it faces some challenges when it comes to off-road performance.

One of the standout features of the 2026 Sierra EV AT4 is its fast charging speeds. In as little as 15 minutes, the truck can regain 120 miles of range on a 350-kW DC fast charger. The vehicle's long range of 478 miles, according to the EPA, further bolsters its appeal for those seeking an electric vehicle for long-distance travel.

Under the hood, or rather under the battery, the Sierra EV AT4 is equipped with two permanent-magnet motors. The front motor's horsepower and torque are unknown, while the rear motor offers 375 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. The combined power output is a robust 725 hp, with a total torque of 775 lb-ft. The transmission is a 2 x 1-speed fixed ratio. The truck's powertrain is powered by a 205.0-kWh NCMA lithium-ion battery and has a curb weight of 8,844 pounds.

The 2026 Sierra EV AT4 offers ample power, accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in a swift 4.3 seconds. The truck's performance is further enhanced by its Goodyear Wrangler Territory AT tires, which boast tall sidewalls nearly 35-inch in outside diameter.

However, the Sierra EV AT4 struggles with off-road activities, even on a modest loose rock and pebble path. Its weight of 8,844 pounds makes it difficult to control on rough terrain, and its soft suspension does not provide enough damping control, causing it to buck front to back during panic stops. Additionally, the truck's lack of proper AT4 ability makes it less suitable for off-road activities.

Despite its off-road challenges, the 2026 Sierra EV AT4 offers several practical features. The truck can extend its cargo capacity without dropping the tailgate, and it offers a folding false wall between the cabin and the bed, with the rear seats splitting 60/40. The optional hard-folding bed cover pushes the all-in price to $93,645.

The high price of the Sierra EV AT4 may deter some potential buyers. Nevertheless, for those seeking a high-performance electric truck with a long range, the 2026 GMC Sierra EV AT4 offers an appealing option, albeit one with some off-road limitations.
