Electrocardiology specialist finances establishment of a new endowed academic position
Prominent Cardiologists Honoured at UCSF and University of Rochester
In a significant development, two eminent cardiologists have been honoured at two prestigious academic institutions in the United States.
At the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine, David Mortara, Ph.D., has been appointed as a professor of Cardiology. Mortara is also a professor of Physiology at the UCSF School of Nursing. Besides his academic achievements, Mortara is the founder of Mortara Instrument, Inc., a leading manufacturer of non-invasive cardiology products and ECG technology.
Meanwhile, Wojciech Zareba, M.D., Ph.D., has been named the inaugural David Mortara Endowed Professor in Cardiology at the University of Rochester. Zareba, who has served as a mentor and advisor at the University of Rochester for the past two decades, earned his M.D. and Ph.D. at the Medical University of Lodz, Poland.
Zareba joined our medical center in 1991 for a postdoctoral fellow heart research follow-up program. Since then, he has been a pillar of strength and support, encouraging his colleagues during difficult times, providing assistance during grant preparation, and mentoring countless numbers of trainees and junior faculty.
Zareba's contributions to the field are profound. He has authored over 700 publications and has served as the principal investigator on multiple NIH and corporate grants, accumulating over $35 million in funding. His research is focused on technology related to cardiac arrhythmias and heart failure, as stated in the professorship's aim.
Ruth O'Regan, M.D., the Chair of Medicine at the University of Rochester, expressed her delight at Zareba's appointment, saying, "Dr. Zareba's dedication to his work and his unwavering commitment to mentorship make him an ideal fit for this professorship."
Interestingly, David Mortara, Ph.D., is not the inaugural David Mortara Endowed Professor in Cardiology. That title belongs to Wojciech Zareba. Despite this, Mortara's contributions to the field of cardiology are significant, and his appointment as a professor at UCSF is a testament to his expertise.
These appointments mark a significant step forward in the field of cardiology, with these esteemed professors set to continue their groundbreaking research and mentorship. Their work will undoubtedly contribute to advancements in the understanding and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias and heart failure.
