Emergency response team THW Bayern expands public knowledge and convenes professionals for their inaugural conference on civil protection.
In light of the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, the topic of civil protection has taken centre stage. The THW (Technisches Hilfswerk) Regional Association Bavaria has been at the forefront of these efforts, organising a Civil Protection Expert Conference in Munich to discuss and address the challenges in civil protection.
Dr. Fritz Helge Voß, the THW representative for Bavaria, led the conference, bringing together over 50 experts from various sectors including police, army, fire brigade, Bavarian Red Cross, German Red Cross, German Life-Saving Society, Johanniter Accident Assistance, Maltese Aid Service, and specialists from the Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior.
The conference aimed to utilise the expertise of all participants to promote awareness of strong civil protection. It served as a platform for a joint professional exchange about the current challenges in civil protection, and was an addition to the ongoing background work in this area.
THW, a federal operational organization supported by over 85,000 volunteers nationwide, is called upon by the federal government for tasks in civil protection, both domestically and internationally. Their tasks include bilateral aid, as well as technical and logistical tasks within the EU’s civil protection mechanism and for UN organizations.
Dr. Voß emphasized that good civil protection requires the ability to act not only from experts, but also from all actors and the population. He also highlighted that to react appropriately to the tense global situation, structures need to be rebuilt and cross-sector awareness for the topic of civil protection needs to be created.
The forum is a new initiative by THW Bavaria to improve and intensify cooperation and coordination among specialists. The first expert conference on civil protection in Bavaria was initiated by Dr. Bruno Merk in 1962. The conference in Munich was also attended by THW leadership in Bonn.
