In a 2017 interview with Swedish television host Fredrik Skavlan, Dame Emma Thompson shared a fascinating tale from her past - an unexpected phone call she received from Donald Trump in the late 1990s.

The phone call took place during the filming of the political comedy Primary Colors, in 1998. Thompson was in the midst of a divorce from her first husband, Kenneth Branagh, and on the day of the call, she learned that her divorce had finally been finalized.

Donald Trump, who was not a public figure at the time, introduced himself during the call and invited Thompson to stay at one of his places and have dinner. Thompson felt caught off guard by the invitation and interpreted the call as stalking, as Trump had found the number of her trailer.

Thompson responded to Trump's invitation with a light-hearted tone, saying, "OK, well I'll get back to you! Thank you so much for ringing." She later jokingly suggested that going on a date with Donald Trump could have changed the course of American history.

The incident took place at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, where Thompson recently spoke about the incident. Thompson did not accept the invitation, and the matter was not pursued further.

Before receiving the phone call from Donald Trump, Thompson was acting on the set of the film "Primary Colors" in 1995, at the same time her divorce from Kenneth Branagh was finalized. She was actively working as a prominent actress at that time.

The story of Thompson's unexpected phone call from Donald Trump is not a new one. Thompson has shared the anecdote on several occasions, including in her interview with Fredrik Skavlan. It serves as a reminder of a time when the future President of the United States reached out to a prominent actress in an unconventional manner.
