Encourage medical studies for cancer treatment advancements in Nigeria - Specialist's Viewpoint
In a recent news conference held in Abuja, Dr. Lola Adeyemi, the Special Adviser to the Minister of State for Health on Research and Innovation, called upon stakeholders to promote research in clinical trials for cancer control in Nigeria.
Dr. Adeyemi, a physician-scientist and healthcare entrepreneur, emphasized the importance of primary healthcare as the foundation of a strong system. She highlighted that promoting clinical trial research is a critical part of cancer care, as it generates locally relevant data and interventions.
The renowned public health expert also emphasized the importance of prevention, early detection, scaling up screening, and research for effective cancer control. She suggested scaling up screening services and diagnostics to make cancer care more affordable.
Dr. Adeyemi acknowledged that healthcare delivery in Nigeria has made progress but also identified areas in need of improvement. She underscored the need for universal access to healthcare, powered by accountability and innovation, as the goal.
On broader health matters, Dr. Adeyemi highlighted innovation, data, and partnerships as essential for a resilient health system in Nigeria. She also emphasized the role of public-private partnership models in strengthening healthcare delivery.
Technology can play a significant role in bridging gaps in healthcare delivery in Nigeria. Dr. Adeyemi stated that embedding cancer control into the Universal Healthcare Coverage (UHC) agenda could save lives and reduce the long-term economic and social costs of the disease.
However, challenges exist with healthcare financing in Nigeria. Dr. Adeyemi suggested that the government can provide the regulatory backbone while the private sector and non-profit actors innovate service delivery.
Notably, Dr. Adeyemi has been recognised for her contributions to journalism, having won the 'Outstanding Community Journalist' award in Lagos. She hopes to use her experience to bridge healthcare disparities and advance equitable access to quality healthcare in Nigeria and other emerging markets.
Healthcare delivery should not be a privilege but a universal right, according to Dr. Adeyemi. She reiterated her call for promotion of research in clinical trials for cancer control, with the aim of improving the Nigerian healthcare system and saving lives.
