England Make Change for Third ODI Against South Africa

England have announced a change to their team for the third One-Day International (ODI) against South Africa, with Jamie Overton replacing Saqib Mahmood. The news was revealed by England assistant coach Marcus Trescothick at a press conference before the match in Southampton on Sunday.

Overton, who was part of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, has taken an indefinite break from red-ball cricket to focus on the white-ball game. The 31-year-old Overton has played six ODIs for England, most recently against West Indies at Edgbaston in May.

Trescothick mentioned that this break is the best way to maximize performances going forward as England heads into a big winter. He also stated that this is a good opportunity for Ben Duckett to get a bit of rest. Duckett has been included in the team for the third ODI but will not be available for the upcoming three T20s against South Africa starting in Cardiff on Wednesday.

The change in the team means that there is continued faith in all-rounders Jacob Bethell, Will Jacks, and potentially Joe Root to share the responsibilities of a fifth bowler instead of selecting a specialist. Jamie Smith, Harry Brook (captain), Jos Buttler (wk), Joe Root, and Jamie Overton have been confirmed in England's XI for the third ODI against South Africa.

Ben Duckett has also been named in England's XI for the third ODI, but Trescothick emphasized that this break is crucial for the batsman to recharge his batteries. England, who are 2-0 down in the three-match series, will be playing for pride in the third ODI against South Africa.

Overton's return to the team may indicate a shift in England's strategy for the final ODI against South Africa. Despite the match being a dead rubber, England will be looking to end the series on a high note. However, it should be noted that Overton's return means he will not be available for England's winter Ashes series against Australia.

England's XI for the third ODI against South Africa:

  1. Jamie Smith
  2. Harry Brook (captain)
  3. Jos Buttler (wk)
  4. Joe Root
  5. Jamie Overton
  6. Jacob Bethell
  7. Will Jacks
  8. Brydon Carse
  9. Jofra Archer
  10. Adil Rashid

This change in the team is a significant development for England as they look to regroup and prepare for the challenges ahead. With the World Cup just around the corner, every match is an opportunity for the players to showcase their skills and solidify their places in the team.
