Enhanced backing for independent theaters in Hamburg
Hamburg's art house cinemas are set to receive a significant boost this year, with an increase in funding of 100,000 euros, bringing the total to 200,000 euros. This increase, made possible by the Cultural and Media Authority, is aimed at strengthening Hamburg's role as a film and media hub.
The funding is calculated based on various factors, including the number of Moin-funded films, audience size, cinema size, and seating capacity. Cinemas can receive a maximum bonus of 10,000 euros each.
Helge Albers, Managing Director of Moin Filmfunding, stated that the bonus is to support and celebrate the commitment of art house cinemas. He has been in this role since April 2019 and has played a significant part in increasing the budget for the Hamburg cinema landscape through his leadership and influence in regional film promotion.
The additional funding will be awarded as part of the Hamburg Film Prizes, which will take place on September 8, 2025, at the Filmkunsttheater.
The local cinema industry can expect many positive developments this year. The Hamburg Film Festival is expanding with the addition of the European Work in Progress and the International Film Distribution Summit to the "Industry Days" (September 29 - October 2, 2025). The Cologne Film Festival will also take place in Hamburg from 2026.
Moreover, the "Kino" Congress will move to Hamburg, merging with the Filmtheater Congress as a joint industry event. This move is expected to further bolster Hamburg's position as a prominent film and media hub.
Art house cinemas in Hamburg are considered the heart of the city's film culture. The Hamburg Short Film Festival, recognised as Germany's fairest festival, is a testament to this. The city's film culture is set to flourish even more with these developments.
