Enhancements for Enticing Pedestrian Experiences in Frankfurt

Frankfurt am Main, a city known for its commitment to environmentally friendly mobility, has recently announced the launch of a new strategy aimed at enhancing pedestrian traffic within its borders. The initiative, which is a central component of the Master Plan Mobility, is spearheaded by Wolfgang Siefert, the City of Frankfurt's Mobility Department Head (Mobilitätsdezernent).

In 2024, hundreds of pedestrians were involved in traffic accidents, some resulting in severe injuries. Recognising the need for action, the city has decided to make pedestrian traffic safer and more comfortable. Measures include wider, barrier-free sidewalks, better-secured crossings, and resting areas.

From 2025 to early 2026, the city will analyze the current situation, develop guidelines, and plan a comprehensive pedestrian network. This will be followed by a more in-depth online participation from October 31st to November 21st. The experiences from cycling are being incorporated into the planning of safe and user-friendly paths for pedestrians.

The strategy invites Frankfurt residents to actively contribute their experiences and ideas to shape the development of pedestrian measures. Concrete action packages will emerge from these investigations, serving as a model for other neighborhoods. The first presentation of the planned course and basic features of the concept was on August 19th, 20XX.

Frankfurt am Main has once again achieved a top ranking in the ADFC bike climate test, underscoring its efforts to promote environmentally friendly mobility. The pedestrian strategy is a testament to the city's continued dedication to sustainable transportation options.

From 2026, detailed investigations will follow in three selected districts. The goal is to design the infrastructure in such a way that people of all ages can move safely, comfortably, and independently on foot. The strategy team includes Mobility Commissioner Wolfgang Siefert and the Foot Traffic Strategy project team.

Further events are planned for the fall, including the Mobility Tour 2025 for seniors, a children and youth action, and a public pedestrian forum. In addition, target group-specific site visits will be offered in three model districts to further specify the results and test them in practice.

The city's involvement starts with an online survey on the portal "Frankfurt asks me" until September 22nd. More than a third of daily trips in Frankfurt are made on foot, making pedestrian safety a crucial aspect of the city's mobility plans. The strategy is based on the Master Plan Mobility, adopted in May 2025.
