In the industrial park of Hemmingstedt, Schleswig-Holstein, an unexpected discovery was made – a 250-kilogram unexploded bomb, believed to be over 80 years old. This has led to a series of measures to ensure public safety and minimise disruptions.

The bomb was found near an oil refinery, suggesting it may have been a target during World War II. As a precaution, a safety perimeter will be established around the site from 9 am, affecting the local population and impacting road and rail traffic.

Residents of the Kirchspielslandgemeinde Heider Umland office have been informed about the situation. For those in need of temporary shelter during the evacuation, arrangements have been made at the Schützenhaus in Hemmingstedt at Pastor-Harder-Straße.

Traffic on the federal highway B5 will be unable to pass through Hemmingstedt from the Busumer Straße junction to the Meldorfer Straße/Fritz-Thiedemann-Ring intersection in Heide. A wide detour has been recommended for travelers heading to Eiderstedt or Husum via federal highway B5. They should drive via Meldorf, Nordermeldorf, and the Wöhrdener roundabout in the direction of Wesselburen, and from there via Schülp and Strubbel to Hemme, and thus back to B5.

Southbound traffic on the A23 motorway will exit at the Meldorf/Albersdorf exit, while northbound traffic will exit at the Heide-West junction due to a section of the motorway within the 1000-meter safety zone being affected.

The Hamburg - Westerland railway line will be closed shortly before the bomb is defused. Marlitt Schuschel from the administration of the Kirchspielslandgemeinde Heider Umland office will be on site on Sunday, along with police and fire department representatives. The bomb disposal unit has been called upon to defuse the bomb on Sunday morning.

Current information on the day of defusing, such as the lifting of the evacuation, will be communicated by the office administration via their website www.amt-heider-umland.de. Marlitt Schuschel can be reached at the citizen's telephone number 0481/60540 or 0176/15 94 90 99 between 8 am and 8 pm on Saturday and Sunday until the evacuation ends.

The sports center is currently unavailable due to construction work. We urge everyone to stay safe and follow the instructions provided by the authorities. Updates will be shared as they become available.
