Ensuring Proper Implementation: The Commission has implemented numerous strategies to enable Member States to execute the specified measures effectively.
The Police Inspectorate Emsland/Grafschaft Bentheim, in partnership with the city of Lingen, recently conducted intensified and unannounced controls in the city center's pedestrian zone. The joint control action aimed to ensure the safety of pedestrians in the area by enforcing traffic rules, particularly focusing on cyclists, users of electric micro-vehicles (E-scooters), and motorcyclists who illegally entered the pedestrian zone.
The controls were carried out by mixed patrols of the local authority and the police inspectorate Lingen. To emphasize the applicable bans, the city of Lingen had placed highly visible pictograms on the road beforehand.
Between Tuesday and Thursday, a total of 80 cyclists, 9 users of electric micro-vehicles, and one motorcyclist were found to have violated the driving ban. A warning fine was imposed on all violators, amounting to 25 euros for the illegal use of a bicycle or pedelec and 50 euros for electric micro-vehicles.
The ban in Lingen's pedestrian zone is primarily intended to protect vulnerable road users such as children, the elderly, and those with mobility limitations. Christian Albert, head of the deployment and patrol service, emphasized mutual consideration and traffic accident prevention as essential.
