Entrepreneurial endeavor sparks from young PLL player's passion for lax stringing craft, leading to a burgeoning business venture.
Rising Star Coulter Mackesy Turns His Passion for Lacrosse into a Thriving Business
Coulter Mackesy, a standout player for the Boston Cannons in the Premier Lacrosse League (PLL), has found success off the field with his stringing business, Tiga Strings.
Mackesy, who developed a reputation as one of the best stringers in the PLL during his rookie season, has been quietly growing his business, especially in the spring with a lighter class load. His hard work has paid off, as Tiga Strings has generated more revenue than his annual PLL base salary.
Tiga Strings, a stringing business founded by Mackesy, takes its name from his alma mater, Princeton University. The company has a captive audience of people who look to Mackesy as someone trustworthy for stringing services, as evidenced by the roughly dozen returning customers he currently has, mostly youth and college players.
Fantum Lacrosse president Isaac Merfalen commented that Mackesy has a unique ability to connect with players and provide them with top-quality services. "Coulter has a captive audience of people who would look to him as someone trustworthy for stringing services," Merfalen said.
Mackesy's journey into the stringing business began about a decade ago when he and his older brother Tyler learned to string sticks together by watching YouTube videos. Today, Mackesy supplements his income by coaching lacrosse camps and promoting Tiga Strings merchandise.
The business and social accounts of Tiga Strings were passed down to Mackesy as he was finishing his collegiate career. Mackesy hopes that Tiga Strings will one day be able to partner with current Princeton lacrosse players to help them earn extra income.
In addition to Tiga Strings, Mackesy has other venture ideas at the intersection of sports and media. He is inspired by larger lacrosse equipment companies like East Coast Dyes, which has become a multimillion-dollar business.
Mackesy's stringing services for his teammates this season were partially motivated by his first-year status, but he also saw it as an opportunity to showcase his business. Pro lacrosse players often find other sources of income due to low salaries compared to other major men's sports leagues in the U.S.
As Mackesy looks to the future, he sees himself potentially passing down Tiga Strings to another talented, ambitious stringer in the Princeton program. Mackesy had a successful career with the Princeton Tigers, setting school records for season and career goals and being a finalist for the 2025 Tewaaraton Award.
Tiga Strings may have started as a passion project for Mackesy, but it has become a thriving business that is poised for even greater success in the future.
