Environmental Committee Acclaims Well-Liked Park Touring Experience
News Article: Transformation of Marl's Volkspark into a Climate Park Progresses
The renovation of Marl's Volkspark is underway, with plans to transform it into a climate park. The Environmental and Sustainability Committee recently received an overview of the project's progress.
Lukas Bachmann from the Department of Environmental Protection and Sustainability, along with Andrea Baudek, the Technical Director, explained the plans for the park's future development and the completed works to the committee. The designated paths in the Volkspark are already quite visible, with new trees planted and paths laid out. The first seating options made from the concrete elements of the former tribune are also visible.
One of the notable features of the park is a "Climate Band" of natural stones leading along the edge of the park towards the playing area. In the south of the park, a volleyball field, basketball hoops, and a calisthenics area will soon be available. Construction of these facilities is currently underway.
The administration is considering whether the pulley wheels from the mine shaft could find a new home at the roundabouts on Carl-Duisberg-Straße. Although it was agreed with RAG that two pulley wheels could be provided for the roundabouts, the concrete implementation is far from simple due to size and safety measures. The committee has tasked the administration to find an alternative location and contact the RAG foundation to discuss a possible cost takeover.
The total costs for the implementation are expected to be around 60,000 euros, including transport. Interested parties can talk to Amprion employees at Flurstraße 65, 45772 Marl, between 10 am and 1 pm, without registration.
The organization behind the project to expand the power line network from Heide/West in Schleswig-Holstein to Polsum is TenneT. Amprion, a separate entity, has chosen the preferred corridor for the high-voltage line. This corridor moves closer to the motorway, allowing for further development of the Schwatter Jans industrial area. The preferred corridor significantly reduces the impact on the Arenberg Forest compared to the initial plan.
A citizen's information market will take place in Marl on September 4, 2025, for people to learn about the current planning status of the high-voltage line project. Photos of the designated paths and the ongoing construction in the Volkspark are available from the city administration's Press Office.
The subsequent meeting discussed the council's decision regarding the fate of two pulley wheels of the support tower AV Schacht 3. The committee is yet to make a decision on this matter.
The transformation of Marl's Volkspark into a climate park is an exciting step towards a greener and more sustainable future for the city. The progress made so far is promising, and the community is encouraged to get involved and learn more about the project.
