Kahukura Ahau, a former social worker from Ngāti Porou, has captured the hearts of many after winning a competition run by Subway. The competition, a quest to find Subway's biggest fan, attracted numerous participants showcasing their love for the brand in unique ways, from original songs to Sub-themed decor.

Ahau's winning entry, dubbed "Subway Dreamworld," featured a tattoo of Subway's version of the "Cool S" or "Super S." This community effort saw Ahau gathering Subway-themed merchandise and a tattoo artist within 24 hours before the video was uploaded.

Ahau's victory was not just a personal triumph but also a significant milestone for moko kanohi bearing Māori people. It helps normalize moko, a tradition that carries deep cultural significance for many in New Zealand.

However, Ahau's journey has not been without challenges. After being diagnosed with multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN-1), a genetic disease affecting the endocrine system, Ahau underwent surgery to remove the spleen and pancreas. This period led Ahau to a dark place, causing them to lose their identity.

To regain their footing, Ahau turned to daily walks and connecting with the ngahere (forest) and the awa (river). This newfound connection helped Ahau emerge from the rut and discover their takatāpui identity.

Despite the online backlash and private messages of hostility, Ahau has remained resilient. The $10,000 prize money, initially thought to be a gold Subway card, was a welcome boost. However, Ahau chose to donate this money to a kai distribution charity named Kura Kai, an organisation that provides food to high schools and whānau in need.

Ahau's decision to donate was driven by their understanding of the financial strain "hungry teenagers" can put on a whānau. As a result, Ahau will also join the Kura Kai mission and help feed rangatahi (young people).

Ahau's inspiring story serves as a reminder of the power of resilience and the importance of giving back to the community. Despite the harsh messages and challenges faced, Ahau continues to shine as an example of courage and determination.
