Estonia's Independence Day Restoration, celebrated on a Wednesday, is commemorated as Flag Day

On August 20, Estonia will commemorate 34 years of its independence restoration with a series of events across the country.

The day will begin with the August 20 Memorial Ceremony at Toompea, starting at 11 a.m. Prime Minister Kristen Michal and President of the Riigikogu Lauri Hussar are expected to attend, with President Alar Karis delivering a speech. Ants Veetõusme, president of the August 20 Club, will also address the ceremony.

At the same venue, the August 20 Club will hold its traditional festive meeting at noon. President Alar Karis and Prime Minister Kristen Michal will deliver welcoming addresses, while deputy chairman of the board of the August 20 Club Alar Maarend will give a speech.

Wreaths will be placed at the base of the August 20 Memorial Stone, with President Hussar laying flowers on behalf of the Riigikogu.

Across Tallinn, Viimsi, Narva, Tartu, and Viljandi, Estonian museums and cultural sites will host family-friendly events. These include workshops, tours, performances, traditional meals, music, dance, and interactive activities.

In the evening, President Alar Karis will host a traditional summer reception at the Rose Garden in Kadriorg, starting at 6 p.m. The event, accompanied by live music, is open to all the people of Estonia.

Throughout the day, flags will be raised on all residential, commercial, and office buildings in Estonia. They will be hoisted at sunrise or by 8 a.m., and lowered at sunset. The events will be broadcast by the public broadcaster ERR.

Visitors to Tallinn can also take advantage of free tours of the Tall Hermann Tower every full and half hour between 11 a.m. and 5.30 p.m.

This day serves as a reminder of Estonia's rich history and its journey towards independence, as well as a celebration of the country's resilience and spirit.
