EU Pesticide Sales Reach New High in 2023

The European Union (EU) witnessed a growth in pesticide sales in 2023, with a total of approximately 19.09 million kg sold, marking an increase of approximately 3.4% from the previous year.

The four biggest agricultural producers in the EU – France, Spain, Germany, and Italy – account for approximately 70% of the pesticides sold. France, in particular, accounts for around 25% of all pesticide sales, followed by Spain with 18%, Germany and Italy with 14% each.

The growth in pesticide sales was not limited to these four countries. In fact, sales increased in five EU countries, with the largest increase observed in Latvia (55%) and Austria (52%). On the other hand, Portugal and Italy had the largest decrease in pesticide sales, with a drop of 44%. Ireland and Slovenia also saw a significant decrease of 38%.

Despite the increase in sales, the number of pesticides sold in the EU has decreased between 2011 and 2023. Sixteen out of the 21 countries in the EU experienced a drop in pesticide sales volumes. Among these, Spain notably experienced high usage levels compared to others, showing a notable increase in sales between 2011 and 2023.

The information provided can be useful for both business and personal purposes, offering insights into the trends and patterns of pesticide sales in the EU.
