The Regensburg district, increasingly affected by the consequences of climate change, has taken a significant step towards protecting its population from the risks associated with excessive sun exposure. Funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety, and Consumer Protection, the project aims to analyse the vulnerability of the region to climatic changes and develop strategies and measures to protect and strengthen nature, infrastructure, economy, and population.
The climate adaptation concept will build on practical approaches like the UV Index sign, which has recently been installed at the popular Guggenberger Lake. This sign, handed over by Gerhard Lindner, Director of AOK Regensburg, to Tanja Schweiger, Chairwoman of the Association for Recreation in the Regensburg Area on August 5, 2025, informs bathers about the current UV values.
The UV Index (UVI) shows the expected peak value of sunburn-effective UV radiation on the ground. Since 2000, the number of new skin cancer cases in Germany has more than doubled, highlighting the need for such measures. The signs illustrate when and how to protect yourself best and the current UV Index can be retrieved daily via an integrated QR code.
Simone Eckert, head of the business office of Health Regions Plus Regensburg, explained that knowing the radiation level helps you protect yourself. The UV Index sign at Guggenberger Lake is part of the climate adaptation strategy of the Regensburg district, which aims to combine protection and education to contribute to health prevention.
Climate Adaptation Manager Sarah Bauch, who has been coordinating the development of a climate adaptation concept for the region since March 2025, explains that measures like the UV Index sign raise awareness of the increasing burden of heat and UV radiation. The Health Regions Plus initiative provides such signs to better protect the population from these risks.
The project for the acquisition of UV index displays in Regensburg within the funding program "Measures to Adapt to Climate Change" is financed by a supporting organization under this specific climate adaptation funding program; however, the exact financing organization is not explicitly named in the available search results.
The business office of Health Regions Plus City and the organization support this action by the city of Regensburg. The goal of the climate adaptation concept is to provide a first, visible step in municipal climate adaptation, as climate change also affects the health of the population. The UV Index sign is a tangible reminder of the need to protect ourselves from the harmful effects of UV radiation, and a step towards a more climate-resilient future for the Regensburg district.
