EU Sustainability Event Highlights Importance of Consistent Regulation Across Member States

The 17th edition of the Materials Regulations and Sustainability Event (MRSE), hosted by a European association representing the automotive supply industry, took place on 25-26 June in Frankfurt. Over 250 participants from around the world gathered to discuss key topics in sustainability and circular design.

The event, sponsored by iPoint, kicked off with a focus on strengthening international cooperation on sustainability. Discussions covered PFAS restrictions and other chemical compliance challenges. Benjamin Krieger, Secretary General of the European association, emphasised the critical role of automotive suppliers in driving Europe's sustainability and innovation efforts.

Day One also featured insights from international experts, who shared legislative insights from Japan, North America, India, and China. Olga Marin, Chair of the CSR Harmonisation Expert Group, moderated two panel discussions.

The first panel discussion focused on how industry cooperation and artificial intelligence can enhance supply chain transparency and resilience. The second panel discussion on Day One delved into how circular design and collaboration across the value chain can drive progress towards a more circular automotive industry.

On Day Two, the spotlight was on the Sustainability Manifesto, which was presented during the event. Mr. Krieger, in his address, acknowledged the recent adoption of the Council's position on End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV) regulation. He also called for regulatory clarity as well as support for automotive remanufacturing and inclusive recycling targets.

Throughout the event, Mr. Krieger highlighted substantial investments by automotive suppliers in clean technologies. The event featured insights from leading companies such as BMW, JLR, Marelli, Adient, and Forvia, as well as representatives from associations, initiatives, and other organizations including ACEA, Eurobat, Plastics Europe, the Responsible Supply Chain Initiative, Drive Sustainability, and Drive Plus.

Luca Pezzini, the Secretary General of the European association organising the event, expressed his satisfaction with the successful conclusion of the 17th MRSE. The event underscored the commitment of the automotive industry to sustainable practices and the importance of collaboration in driving progress towards a more circular and sustainable future.
