Europe vows sustained assistance to Belarusians in their journey toward democratic governance, stating an unyielding commitment until the transition is completed

The European Union (EU) has reiterated its call for the immediate release of political prisoners in Belarus and urged the government to cease repressive actions and engage in an inclusive national dialogue. The strong statement, issued by Kaja Kallas, High Representative, and Marta Kos, European Commissioner, on August 9, 2025, also emphasised the unacceptability of the ongoing repression in Belarus and the need for it to stop.

The EU leaders pledged to continue imposing sanctions on those who suppress democracy and violate human rights in Belarus. The latest sanctions target several defense enterprises linked to the regime's military and technological support for Russia, including UE "Belvneshpromservice," NP LLC "OKB TSP," and LLC "KB Unmanned Helicopters." Additionally, major Belarusian banks such as Belagroprombank, Bank Dobrobyt, Development Bank, and Belinvestbank have been removed from the SWIFT financial messaging system, had their correspondent accounts closed, and face a ban on any EU transactions.

In a show of solidarity with the people of Belarus, the EU has committed nearly €170 million since 2020 to support Belarusian civil society, independent media, victims of repression, and political prisoners. This funding is used to provide rehabilitation, medical care, relocation assistance, and legal defense to those affected by the regime's actions. Cooperation among EU member states and partners such as Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Latvia, Estonia, Luxembourg, and Spain helps sustain an International Humanitarian Fund dedicated solely to aiding victims of the regime's repression.

These measures, which aim to isolate the Lukashenko regime's military and economic support infrastructure without harming the everyday needs of Belarusian citizens, reflect the EU's strategic approach of supporting Belarusian democratic forces and civil society while economically and militarily isolating the Lukashenko regime. The statement was issued to mark the fifth anniversary of the falsification of the presidential elections in Belarus, and it also urges Belarus to stop supporting Russia's illegal war against Ukraine.
