European airport accommodations that offer value for money

In a comprehensive analysis by HolidayCheck, 135 hotels around the 30 busiest airports in Europe were scrutinised, spanning geographically from Finland to Greece and from Portugal to Poland. The survey covered 17 European countries, offering valuable insights into the European airport hotel landscape.

The largest airports in Europe, with a combined total of 886 million passengers per year, are among the most important traffic hubs worldwide. Paris Charles de Gaulle, with over 67 million flight passengers annually, takes the lead. However, some Southern European airports can be costly traps in terms of airport hotels, while others offer impressive value for money.

Spain has a strong presence in the top 30, with six airports including holiday destinations such as Palma de Mallorca and Gran Canaria. Interestingly, Gran Canaria stands out as a special case, where no hotel is located within the defined radius. Conversely, guests rated hotels in Rome (4.17), Dublin (4.35), and Barcelona (4.65) significantly lower, indicating qualitative shortcomings despite extensive offerings.

The evaluation criteria included average guest satisfaction, room size, and price level. The analyzed hotels achieved varying ratings, with particularly high satisfaction scores recorded in Northern Italy and Germany. Milan-Malpensa leads with 5.55 stars on HolidayCheck, followed by Munich (5.5) and Bergamo (5.47).

However, not all airports provide an extensive selection of accommodations. Some airports, like Frankfurt and Amsterdam, offer more than a dozen recommended accommodations on their websites, while others limit themselves to a single house or do not provide any recommendations at all. For airports without official hotel recommendations, particularly in Spain, the nearest accommodations were determined via Google Maps.

Striking regional differences exist in the price-performance ratio. Hotels in Spain and Eastern Europe offer good combinations of quality and price. The Holiday Inn Express Malaga Airport offers a very good price-performance ratio with a current price around €109 including taxes, good reviews (8.6/10), soundproof rooms, air conditioning, and included breakfast. Also notable is the B&B Hotel Alicante Aeropuerto, with a strong price-performance rating of 8.6 and good comfort and staff ratings. For proximity to airports, these hotels stand out in Spain for their value.

Germany impresses with high quality in airport hotels. Frankfurt and Amsterdam are also considered central transfer points in European air traffic. Amsterdam Schiphol and Madrid-Barajas follow with over 61 million each. Munich and DΓΌsseldorf airport hotels achieve top scores but are priced in the upper range.

In conclusion, the survey reveals a diverse landscape of airport hotels across Europe, with Germany and Spain standing out for their offerings. However, travellers should be cautious when choosing accommodations in cities like Rome, Dublin, and Palma de Mallorca, as high costs do not always guarantee high quality. Eastern Europe offers the best value for money in airport hotels.
