European Space Agency Grants Valerann €3.6 million Contract for Building AI-Powered Satellite-Based Traffic Monitoring System

In a significant stride towards enhancing road safety and efficiency, Valerann, a global leader in AI-powered, data-driven road traffic management solutions, has been granted a €3.6M co-funded contract from the European Space Agency's Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) program.

Established in 2016, Valerann operates from offices in the UK, the US, Israel, and Spain, serving customers worldwide. The company's flagship product, Lanternn by Valerann (LbV), is at the heart of this new initiative. LbV is a revolutionary system designed to help road operators improve road safety by providing a real-time, holistic overview of single corridor road traffic.

LbV offers features such as risk profiling, on a single pane of glass, and is set to undergo a transformation with the development of LbV for networks. This new system will cater to managing national-scale road networks, arterial roads, and intersections. It will provide superior holistic coverage of traffic and road assets monitoring, risk management, improved incident management and prioritization, and extended real-time traffic monitoring and predictive capabilities, even for underserved rural roads.

The European countries set to benefit from this new traffic system include Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and the United Kingdom. The contract supports the development and demonstration of an AI and satellite data-enabled traffic monitoring and incident detection platform. The European Space Agency's Space Solutions program is backing Valerann in leveraging satellite data and AI to improve road safety and efficiency.

Valerann's mission is to transform road traffic safety and efficiency by leveraging space technology and AI. The company's multi-award-winning solution is already in use by public and private operators in various regions, including the US, UK, Europe, and Central and Latin America.

LbV uses deep data analytics to process large volumes of current and historical traffic-related data. The platform improves road traffic authorities' situational awareness and reduces incident detection time by processing large volumes of real-time traffic-related data using sophisticated AI and computer vision algorithms.

With this new contract, Valerann aims to extend its monitoring capabilities to large, complex road networks and rural areas to further reduce accidents and improve response times. The ultimate goal is to save lives by improving safety, efficiency, and emergency response in both rural areas and motorways. The initiative aligns with the BASS program's objective of supporting innovative services that leverage space technology and data in key markets, such as transportation.

Moreover, Valerann's solution is aligned with the EU Global Gateway Strategy's aims for seamless, sustainable, and environmentally friendly international corridor management. Valerann is redefining modern mobility through increased roadway safety and improved operational efficiency. Customers report double-digit reductions in accident rates as a result of Valerann's proactive road management.
