Examining and promoting life exterior to the ultra-Orthodox Jewish sector

In the vibrant city of New York, a group of individuals face complex challenges that are comparable to some of the most vulnerable populations. These are former members of the ultra-Orthodox community, who, due to a variety of factors, find themselves struggling to break cycles of poverty and integrate into mainstream society.

Social isolation, limited access to employment and education opportunities, cultural barriers, and a lack of tailored social services all contribute to the difficulties these individuals encounter. These challenges hinder their economic mobility and integration, compounded by systemic issues such as concentrated poverty, discrimination, and insufficient support networks.

Despite these obstacles, there is a spirit of determination among this group, reminiscent of immigrants in a new city. One organisation, Footsteps, stands by its members, offering support at critical moments to help propel them forward.

Footsteps' 2024 community survey paints a stark picture of the financial struggles faced by its members. Nearly a quarter of respondents are unable to meet their monthly expenses, while an additional 50% are just managing to get by.

The decision to leave the ultra-Orthodox community is not a light one. Struggles faced by these individuals include housing insecurity, employment barriers, and social isolation. However, the misconceptions about Jewish affluence and the sensitivity of discussing intra-community issues often result in this group falling through the cracks.

As we navigate through the complexities of modern urban life, it's essential to recognise and address the unique challenges faced by these individuals. Their resilience and determination serve as a testament to the human spirit, and it is our collective responsibility to support them in their journey towards a brighter future.
