"Examining Female Genetics Gathers Momentum Prior to the World Championships"
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe has announced that over 90% of the expected starters at the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo have undergone a mandatory once-off gender test. These tests, performed by cheek swab or blood test, are aimed at verifying female biology and ensuring fair competition in the women's classes.
The decision for the introduction of these tests was made by the World Athletics Council at the Indoor World Championships in China in March. All athletes wishing to compete in women's classes relevant to the world rankings from September 1st will be required to undergo the SRY gene test once in their career. The test results will be destroyed after the one-off examination.
The tests are being conducted in Germany before the World Athletics Championships, which will take place from September 13th to the 21st. However, the genital examinations for the female athletes of the German national team were introduced only at the last minute due to emerging concerns around eligibility criteria and possibly delayed policy decisions.
The German Athletics Association has criticized the introduction of the test with short notice, citing challenges for athletes and the association morally, ethically, and logistically. Despite this, Sebastian Coe has emphasized that there has been overwhelming support for the gender test, which determines biological gender.
Coe also stated, "The female category is absolutely sacred to me." He further added, "We don't do gender tests, we verify female biology." He also emphasized that everyone has their own perspective and no one has to see the world the way he does.
The tests are being carried out due to the tight deadlines set by World Athletics. Coe stated that the decision for the gender tests was not made in the past few weeks, but was a decision made with the integrity and fairness of the sport in mind.
It's important to note that the gender tests for athletes are not about collecting any other data, no genetic information or DNA. The aim is to ensure a level playing field for all athletes and maintain the integrity of the World Athletics Championships. If everything goes according to plan, the tests should be completed before the start of the championships.
