Examining Kids from Families with Addiction History: Experts Review "Memories of a Forgotten Childhood" Film Screening

In a poignant gathering hosted by the Regensburg Addiction Work Circle, the autobiographical short film "Memories of a Forgotten Childhood" by Lars Smekal was screened, shedding light on the often hidden world of children growing up in households affected by addiction.

The film, vividly and densely portraying the life of an 11-year-old named Niklas, who navigates between his mother's alcohol addiction and his father's gambling addiction, resonated deeply with the audience. The authentic and open portrayal of Smekal's childhood was particularly valued, offering valuable insights into the experiences of children in similar situations.

Smekal, the director of the film, shared his personal experiences during an open discussion following the screening. Participants had the opportunity to ask questions and engage in an in-depth conversation with him, fostering a sense of understanding and empathy.

The event contributed significantly to strengthening the awareness and ability to act of professionals in dealing with this sensitive topic. It underscored the importance of offering help and support to family members, neighbours, teaching, and care personnel who may be affected by a parent's addiction.

Statistics reveal that 3 million children in Germany currently live with at least one parent affected by addiction. Every 4th to 5th child in Germany is affected by a parent's addiction, making it the largest known risk group for later developing an addiction themselves (Nacoa Germany).
