"Examining the safety levels of Switzerland as a residential destination"
Switzerland, renowned for its picturesque landscapes and chocolate, finds itself at the centre of a recent discussion about safety. While the country is often ranked among the Top-10 safest countries in the world, there have been some cautionary warnings issued.
According to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), 86 percent of people in Switzerland feel safe walking alone at night, a figure significantly higher than the OECD average of 74 percent. This statistic, coupled with the Swiss Federal Statistical Office's confirmation that Switzerland has the lowest homicide rate within the OECD (0.3 compared to the average of 2.6), paints a reassuring picture.
However, the US Country Report on Switzerland states that petty crime is more common, particularly in Geneva airport, central train station (Cornavin), and other transportation hubs and tourist areas. Organized groups of pick-pockets are known to operate in major tourist sites and during conferences, festivals, shows, or exhibitions. Thieves often work in pairs, with one creating a disturbance while the other steals belongings.
These warnings have not deterred everyone. One reader, Eva WA, commented that if Switzerland is dangerous, one would have to travel to the moon. The Local conducted a survey that found 316 respondents believe the US travel warning for Switzerland is vastly exaggerated.
Despite these warnings, the US State Department advises travellers to Switzerland to "exercise normal precautions" against petty crime. This advice is in line with the Global Peace Index ranking, which places Switzerland in the 5th place in terms of safety, and the statement by the Swiss Federal Statistical Office that Switzerland is among the safest nations on earth according to multiple international studies and surveys.
It is worth noting that while violent crime against foreign visitors is rare, the US Country Report on Switzerland does highlight it as a potential risk. However, Martin Haene, a notable figure, believes Switzerland is "very dangerous," with the risk of being hit by a cow or suffering from an overdose of delicious chocolate, rather than from petty crime.
The cities of Bern, Zurich, Geneva, and Basel each have their unique crime rates. Bern, the capital, is known for its low crime rates, while the larger cities have slightly higher crime rates. Regardless, the Swiss authorities encourage tourists to remain vigilant and take common-sense precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit.
The safety of Switzerland, despite the occasional warnings, remains a testament to the country's commitment to maintaining a secure environment for its residents and visitors alike. As with any travel destination, it is always advisable to stay informed and exercise caution.
