Ice Bumper Cars at Sprinker Recreation Center: A Fun Winter Activity in Tacoma

The Sprinker Recreation Center in Tacoma offers more than just ice-skating – it also features Ice Bumper Cars, a thrilling year-round activity that can be added to a family ice-skating session.

For those who want to give the bumper cars a try, it's essential to know a few details. Firstly, the bumper car sessions last 15 minutes, and you'll need to sign up online in advance. Close-toed, flat shoes are required to ride, and the bumper cars have deep seats with high backs, making it easy for an adult to ride with a smaller child.

Before hopping into the bumper cars, a short instructional video is shown to ensure safety. As for age requirements, kids must be age 6 or older and at least 42 inches tall to ride alone. Riders ages 3 and older but under 42 inches tall can ride for free with a paying adult.

The bumper car area is chilly, so it's recommended to bring a sweater. An observation area with stadium seating is available upstairs for those who prefer to watch the action.

The cost of a bumper car session is $12, which is comparable to the cost of a skate session at another local ice rink. Parking at Sprinker Recreation Center is free.

It's worth noting that the Ice Bumper Cars were originally published in 2021 and were updated in December 2024 by the website's managing editor, Allison Sutcliffe. As of June 30, 2025, the Ice Bumper Cars at Sprinker Recreation Center are closed for maintenance.

When the concession stand is open, outside food is not allowed, but vending machines offering drinks, snacks, and Seattle's Best Coffee are available. If you're looking for something more substantial, many fast-food restaurants are within a short drive.

Lastly, the bathrooms are located right next to the rink, but skates are not allowed in the restrooms.

Whether you're a local or a visitor, the Ice Bumper Cars at Sprinker Recreation Center provide a fun, exciting addition to your winter activities in Tacoma.
