Executive of Norwegian Lottery Steps Down Following Error that Inaccurately Informed Thousands of a Million-Dollar Win
In a shocking turn of events, Tonje Sagstuen, the CEO of Norway's state lottery, Norsk Tipping, has stepped down following a significant error in the lottery's system. The blunder, which occurred in 2023, was caused by a code error in the system that converts Eurocents to Norwegian kroner.

The math error in the currency conversion process saw the prize cash being multiplied by 100 instead of being divided by 100. This mistake centred on Germany sending the Norway lottery prize monies in Euros. The public, gaming regulators, and the Norwegian Minister of Culture and Equality, Lubna Jaffery, have criticised Norsk Tipping for the error.
Following an emergency meeting between Norsk Tipping's board and the Ministry of Culture, Sagstuen apologised for the blunder and resigned from her position. She claimed it was her responsibility to handle the mistakes that have occurred.
The latest error by Norsk Tipping has received significant public attention and criticism. In May, it was revealed that the Norwegian Gaming Authority was considering fining Norsk Tipping €3.9m ($4.4m) for a previous lottery glitch. The authority is now considering penalising Norsk Tipping for the latest error.
