Exhibition showcasing tales, legends, and works of Georg Cornicelius now open to public
Georg Cornicelius, renowned as "the painter of Hanau" in the 19th century, is the focus of a captivating exhibition at Schloss Philippsruhe. The exhibition, titled "People, Tales, Myths: Discover Georg Cornicelius," offers a comprehensive look into his career, featuring works from all phases and selected paintings by his students.
The exhibition showcases a variety of pieces, including "AschenbrΓΆdel" (1868), "Georg Cornicelius - Self-Portrait" (1858), "The Artist's Cottage Garden" (1881), "Judgment Lime Tree" (around 1870), and "Children in the Room" (around 1880). Cornicelius, born on August 28, 1825, in Hanau, created over 600 paintings, numerous drawings, and studies throughout his illustrious career.
Many of his draft drawings make it clear how he prepared and realized his paintings, providing a fascinating insight into his creative process. The exhibition's title, "Discover Georg Cornicelius," is programmatic and structures the work and its diversity in 12 thematic routes.
The Historical Museum Hanau Schloss Philippsruhe, located at Philippsruher Allee 45, 63454 Hanau, is hosting this special exhibition until April 26, 2025. The museum offers exciting lectures and tours about the Cornicelius exhibition on Thursdays, which has been designated as the long museum day, allowing for after-work visits.
The museum has arranged special opening hours for the exhibition. From August 29, 2025, the museum will be open Tuesday to Friday from 10.00 - 17.00, Thursday from 10.00 - 19.00, and Saturday/Sunday from 11.00 - 18.00.
