Expansion of Giessen District Heating Network: Construction of New Pipeline Begins

The city of Giessen is set to see changes in its district heating network, as construction on a new pipeline begins on June 2. The project, carried out by Stadtwerke Giessen, aims to make the district heating network more flexible and eliminate the need for an additional heat exchanger in Wieseck.

The first two sections of the pipeline will be laid in the Rudolf Diesel Street/Ursum/Oberlach Way industrial area, marking the beginning of about four kilometers of connecting pipeline. This new infrastructure will allow environmentally friendly district heating from the existing heating plant in the former US depot to reach the Eli Lilly site in Wieseck, addressing the growing demand for district heating in the area.

The construction project is divided into two phases. The first phase will focus on Oberlach Way and Coleman Street, with work expected to be completed by the end of July. For this phase, both roadway and sidewalk areas will be affected, resulting in closures and various detours. Vehicles coming from the Ursulum exit towards Frankfurt will be routed via the "U20" detour through Oberlachweg, Rudolf-Diesel-Straße, Rödgener Straße, and Lilienthalstraße.

For the second construction phase, a one-way closure of Colemanstraße towards the "Am Alten Flugplatz" area is necessary. Work in Coleman Street is expected to be completed by mid-October. It's important to note that all detours are clearly signposted on-site to ensure smooth navigation for commuters.

The construction project is causing significant inconvenience to local residents, and an apology has been expressed by Ulli Boos. Despite this, efforts are being made to minimise disruptions and complete the construction work within the planned timeframe.

The person responsible for the management of the new heating plant pipeline in Oberlach Way and Coleman Street is not publicly specified. The Giessen district heating network is expanding rapidly as part of this project, aiming to provide a more efficient and sustainable heating solution for the city.

As always, we encourage residents to stay informed and follow the signage during the construction period. We appreciate your understanding and patience during this time.
