Expanded Driving Classes for Nearly 9 Million Motorists in the Region

In the upcoming year, 52 districts and approximately 4.2 million car drivers across Germany will experience a change in their regional classes for motor vehicle liability insurance, according to the German Insurance Association (GDV).

The GDV classifies 413 registration districts in Germany annually, with each district being assigned a regional class based on its damage statistics in motor vehicle liability insurance. In 2022, around 56 districts will see an improvement in their regional classes, while the remaining 305 districts will maintain the same classification.

Notably, Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria has the highest Index Value of 143.00, followed by OstallgΓ€u in the same region with a slightly higher Index Value of 204.09. These high Index Values indicate worse damage statistics than the national average, with Berlin leading the pack with an Index Value of 137.26. Conversely, the Prignitz in Brandenburg has the lowest Index Value of 69.73, meaning damages are 30% lower than the national average.

For around 3.5 million fully or partially insured motorists, better regional classes will apply in the future. However, it is important to note that a change in the regional class does not yet allow any statement to be made about the development of the entire motor vehicle insurance premium.

In partial coverage, Bamberg in Bavaria has the lowest Index Value of 56.45, while in comprehensive coverage, Wesermarsch in Brake, Lower Saxony has the lowest Index Value of 76.17.

For almost 85% or around 31.2 million insured individuals, everything will remain the same in regional classes. This means that their motor vehicle liability insurance premiums will not be affected by the changes taking place in 2022.

The Index of motor vehicle liability insurance is based on the national average with the value 100, and a lower value indicates better damage statistics than the average. The Index values are crucial in determining the regional classes and, subsequently, the insurance premiums for motorists across Germany.
