Expanded fleet of electronic scooters and bicycles introduced in Dresden
Dresden is set to strengthen its urban mobility options with the introduction of e-scooters and e-bikes, starting August 1, 2025. Three providers - BOLT, VOI, and RideMovi - will launch with a combined total of 2,500 e-scooters, while two providers, yet to be named, will introduce 2,000 e-bikes.
The expansion of these sharing offerings is in response to the growing demand for e-scooters and e-bikes as an efficient and eco-friendly mode of transportation. The new e-scooters and e-bikes will serve as feeder services to train stations or be used for direct trips within the city.
To ensure the orderliness of the sharing systems, Dresden plans to establish provider-neutral sharing stations. The city aims to maintain a balance in fleet distribution, with a maximum of 30 percent of the vehicles located in the city centre and a minimum of 10 percent in the outskirts.
The new e-scooters will be equipped with gyroscope sensors to recognise lying e-scooters, and the existing e-scooters of the LIME company in Dresden will be replaced by the new offerings. Providers will also be subject to new conditions and framework requirements to ensure a city-friendly and harmonious operation.
In addition, the providers will implement the "Sharing Guidelines for Mobility" adopted by the city council. This includes a photo requirement and geolocation check before ending the rental, short response times, and regular, close exchange with representatives of visually impaired and mobility-impaired people.
The operation of these sharing offerings in Dresden will no longer be free of charge, and permits are required. It's important to note that the new quotas will not all be available from August 1, 2025, but will be introduced gradually over the following weeks.
During the transition period, there may be a higher number of incorrectly parked vehicles in some areas. However, the city is working closely with the providers to minimise this impact and maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of Dresden's streets.
Currently, only 29 percent of trips in Dresden are made by private car. The introduction of e-scooters and e-bikes is expected to encourage more residents and visitors to choose sustainable and environmentally friendly modes of transportation, contributing to a greener and more livable city.
