Expanding Internet Speeds and Enhancing Mobile Network across Algeria on a Broad Scale
In a crucial evaluation meeting held on September 2, 2025, in Algiers, the Minister of Post, Wire, and Wireless Transport, Mr. Sayed Ali Zrouqi, emphasized the need for a faster pace in installing a new batch of 300 automated teller machines (ATMs) and the completion of the Fiber Optic Technology Rollout (FTTH) program by the end of 2027.
The meeting, which involved key officials from the ministry and its institutions, focused on initiatives that impact the quality of postal and telecommunication services for citizens. A summary of the results from the first eight months of the year was presented, highlighting areas of progress as well as challenges in some projects.
To improve mobile and internet coverage, the Minister ordered the acceleration of the upgrade of existing mobile stations and the construction of new ones, especially along major roadways. The Minister mandated that future tenders for additional 600 ATMs require machines with integrated withdrawal and payment functionalities.
Regarding the FTTH program, the Minister's directives include connecting new households and converting existing ones from old copper networks to fiber optic. However, no directives were issued related to the review of progress on projects and programs outlined in the sector's work plan or the focus on initiatives that impact the quality of postal and telecommunication services for citizens in this paragraph.
In response to the presented challenges, the Minister issued a series of directives to accelerate the pace of work. The meeting concluded with a renewed emphasis on responsibility, initiative, and coordinated teamwork among all stakeholders.
The Minister also ordered a quick census of uncovered areas to be included in a new program aimed at ensuring equitable access to modern electronic communications. To achieve this, regular assessments at all levels will be required to address any delays in the FTTH program.
In terms of electronic payment systems, the Minister's directives did not specify any particular partners or technology providers. However, in general, common partners and technology providers for such projects include major telecommunications companies, financial institutions, and technology firms specializing in electronic payments and ATM rollouts.
As the rollout of FTTH and the installation of new ATMs progress, citizens can look forward to improved postal, telecommunication, and electronic payment services in the coming years.
