Expanding Operations: Rivian Advances with $5 Billion Electronic Vehicle Factory in Georgia

Rivian, the electric vehicle manufacturer, is set to make significant strides in Georgia with a series of events scheduled for later this month. The events, which include a community gathering and a formal kickoff ceremony, are noteworthy milestones in the construction and production timeline of Rivian's $5 billion electric vehicle factory in Georgia.

The community event, taking place on September 14, 2023, will provide an opportunity for stakeholders, government officials, and local residents to gather and receive updates on the progress and future plans of Rivian's operations in Georgia. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp is among the attendees expected at the event.

The formal kickoff ceremony, scheduled for September 16, 2023, will celebrate Rivian's partnership with Georgia and the planned resumption of construction on the factory, which halted in March 2024. The ceremony will be attended by Rivian executives, local government officials, community leaders, and key business partners.

The new headquarters, slated to open later this year, will initially employ 100 people. However, it is expected to eventually house 500 workers to support Rivian's operations in Georgia. The factory, situated near Social Circle, is expected to start production in 2028 and is anticipated to have an annual capacity of about 200,000 units upon completion.

Rivian's progress in Georgia is further boosted by a $6.6 billion Department of Energy loan, which the company won final approval for in January. The loan funds, available through September 2028, cannot be accessed by Rivian until it resumes work on the Georgia factory.

In response to the ongoing developments, Rivian has moved production of its upcoming R2 SUV to its plant in Normal, Illinois, to expedite sales. The company stopped construction on its Georgia factory project in March 2024.

The information provided in this article was supplied by a Rivian spokesperson in an email to Automotive Dive. These events mark a significant step forward for Rivian's electric vehicle manufacturing operations in Georgia.
