Expanding role of Steinbach's consulting job sparks controversy
Former Brandenburg Economics Minister Jörg Steinbach Challenges Temporary Ban on Consultancy Role
Former Brandenburg Economics Minister Jörg Steinbach, once known as "Mr. Tesla" during his tenure, is opposing the state government's temporary ban on his consultancy role at CMS law firm. The ban, which lasts until the end of 2026, was imposed due to potential conflicts of interest with the state.
Steinbach, a member of the SPD, announced his plans for a consultancy role with CMS law firm in March, which were reportedly approved by the state government in May. However, the state government's stance changed when Steinbach disclosed his plans for an expansion of activities at the law firm, which went beyond the initially allowed consulting without a connection to Brandenburg.
During his tenure as economics minister, Steinbach was instrumental in advising Brandenburg on the settlement of US electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla in Grünheide. It was CMS law firm that provided the advice.
The state government initially had no objections, provided there were no activities related to Brandenburg. However, the subsequent review, conducted "in the context of an intended expansion" of Steinbach's activities at the law firm, led to the ban.
Steinbach has stated that he only submitted one application to CMS law firm in March. He is now considering legal action with his lawyer regarding the ban.
Government spokeswoman Ines Filohn referred to an ongoing procedure regarding this issue. The cabinet's decision to temporarily prohibit Steinbach from working for CMS law firm was made due to the potential conflicts of interest with the state.
Previously, "Spiegel" reported on this matter. The German Press Agency was informed of Steinbach's statement. Steinbach is currently considering his next steps and has not ruled out further legal action.
