Expanding Vehicle Logistics Capacity: ARS Altmann Takes Over Ravenna and Civitavecchia Port Terminals

In July 2025, ARS Altmann will launch a new automotive terminal in Ravenna, Italy, as part of a comprehensive multimodal strategy. This terminal, operated by ASIA S.r.l., a joint venture between ARS Altmann and Gruppo Sapir, is set to offer open access to multiple shipping lines, providing a neutral alternative in Italy.

The port of Ravenna, according to ARS Altmann's leadership, is the most suitable location to enhance more efficient and lean logistics between Europe and Asia. The terminal's site is already fully rail-connected with three separate backup lines, making it an ideal hub for seamless transportation.

The Ravenna terminal will boast a 350m quay, a 12.5m draft, and 5 railway tracks by 2027. It will also have a draft of 12.5 meters and quay capacity for vessels up to 40 meters wide. In addition, a 2,000 sq.m workshop and PDI-building is scheduled for the terminal.

The terminal's initial capacity will be for storing 6,000 vehicles from September 2025, with plans to expand to 20,000 by 2028. The future size of the vehicle storage area is planned to be 88,000 square meters by 2028. The terminal will eventually have a second quay, and the vehicle processing center and washing tunnels will be expanded through 2026 and beyond.

Ravenna is being developed with electric vehicle logistics in mind, including electric vehicle battery charging points powered by renewable energy. Five dedicated rail tracks are being built within the terminal for faster loading and unloading of trains.

ARS Altmann aims to embrace the full logistics needs of carmakers seeking a capable, competent partner with a strong European footprint. The new Ravenna terminal reflects a strong integration of services, including ARS Altmann's own rail wagons and traction, terminal and value-added operations.

Interestingly, the terminal's launch coincides with ARS Altmann's 50th anniversary. Meanwhile, in Civitavecchia, ARS Altmann is expanding its operations through CANADA S.r.l., a joint venture between ARS Altmann and CFFT SPA.

The Ravenna terminal, designed as an open-access port facility for multiple shipping lines, is set to revolutionize the automotive logistics industry in Italy, offering a neutral and efficient alternative for shipping lines and carmakers alike.
